Joëlle Rhode explores the richness, the subtlety, the delicacy of the oil glaze.
Her creations begin with a desire for color; a desire for two, three colors that invite themselves onto her canvas. The colors mix directly on the support, be it on paper or on wood, and the overlaying of successive transparent layers gives depth and a light sensation to the works. By pushing back, removing, scratching, wiping, letting the paint run, shapes emerge.
Her eye then seeps into the light of a natural environment. She feels that in the aspect of a desert, the contrasting colors of a tree, of its bark, the fractals of a shoreline, of a rock… hides the potential that will later become the reality of her works.
The artist thus creates paintings made of light and chiaroscuro evoking horizons, shores, forests, landscapes of sky and water... Joëlle Rhode offers us an evanescent and unreal universe like a mirage, and seems invite us to cross the mirror to reach a mysterious and magical dimension in the colors of her emotions.
